Call for Participation: the 2015 Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) Pioneers Workshop

Assalamualaikum and hi!

Dear PhD researchers who are studying in the area of human-robot interaction,

Here's an event not to be missed! Received the Call for Participation through email from Temi Olugbade and immediately thought about sharing this information on my blog :)

HRI Pioneers 2015
Workshop Date: 2 March 2015
Location: Portland, Oregon, USA
Workshop URL and Program: http://www.hripioneers.info/hri15

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

The tenth annual Human-Robot Interaction Pioneers Workshop will be held in Portland, Oregon on Monday 2 March 2015 in conjunction with the 2015 ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction. The aims of the workshop are to foster creativity and collaboration surrounding key challenges in human-robot interaction, and to empower student researchers early in their careers.

We invite students pursuing a PhD* to consider applying. Each year, HRI Pioneers brings together a cohort of the world’s top student researchers to present and discuss their work with distinguished student peers and senior scholars in the field. An overwhelming majority of past attendees have gone on to phenomenal careers in academia, government, and industry. To facilitate attendance, we expect to provide financial support to most attendees that will cover part of the workshop and main conference costs (e.g., travel, registration, and meals). All interested students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.

*Masters students, such as those enrolled in an MS/PhD or those continuing onto a PhD program, are welcome to apply.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES & REVIEW PROCESS

Graduate students pursuing a PhD degree in a field related to human-robot interaction, should submit the following materials:
  • Extended abstract – an anonymized two-page description of the applicant’s past, current, or proposed work (in ACM SIGCHI proceedings format). In particular, it should cover:
    • the key research questions/motivation of the applicant’s work,
    • background and related work that informs the research,
    • a statement of hypotheses or description of the technical problem,
    • the research approach and methodology, and
    • results to date (if any) and a description of remaining work.
  • CV – a two-page curriculum vitae of the student.

Further details, including templates, are now available on the workshop website at http://www.hripioneers.info/hri15

The application process will be open on November 1 and will continue through November 28, 2014.

The HRI Pioneers Workshop will follow a review process in which submissions will be evaluated by a number of factors including:
  • the quality of the submission (blind review),
  • the expected benefits of the workshop for the applicant’s PhD research, and
  • the applicant’s contribution to the diversity of topics, backgrounds, and institutions.
We hope to achieve a diversity of research topics, disciplinary backgrounds, methodological approaches, and home institutions. As such, we do not expect more than two students to be invited per institution. In addition, we especially encourage underrepresented minorities and women to apply.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PUBLICATION & ATTENDANCE

Accepted abstracts will be published alongside Late-Breaking Reports in the extended abstracts section of the main HRI conference proceedings, and archived in the ACM Digital Library. All authors of accepted submissions are expected to attend the Pioneers Workshop and the main conference poster session, at which they will present their work as a poster. A detailed program for the workshop and the participation guidelines for the poster session will be available after the camera-ready deadline.

What is a hooding ceremony?

I have always been intrigued by this event called 'the hooding ceremony' since I began my student life in UiTM about 3 years ago. This term always come to my attention and 'pops out' during the UiTM convocation ceremony. Yesterday I saw a post on the hooding ceremony (again) when my other half was browsing through IPSis UiTM's FB page. IPSis wrote that 52 PhD graduates had successfully completed their studies in UiTM and will receive their scroll in the 81st convocation ceremony. Picture take from IPSis UiTM's Facebook page Another picture take from IPSis UiTM's Facebook page Now, what is a hooding ceremony? It is simply a ceremony held for students graduating with a master’s or PhD degree. The placing of the hood signifies the passage from student to 'master's' or ‘PhD'. The hooding ceremony and recognition of students’ accomplishments draw attention to the scholarly and the personal achievements of the candidates for g
