I just got to know that The United Nations (UN) had declared that the date of 3rd December every year to be observed as the International Day of Disabled Persons.
The same practice is carried out in Malaysia, under the purview of the Department of Social Welfare (Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat). Last year (2012) the theme was “Removing Barriers to Create an Inclusive Accessible Society for All". Taken form UN's official site:
Persons with disabilities, “the world’s largest minority”, often face barriers to participation in all aspects of society. Barriers can take a variety of forms, including those relating to the physical environment or to information and communications technology (ICT), or those resulting from legislation or policy, or from societal attitudes or discrimination. The result is that persons with disabilities do not have equal access to society or services, including education, employment, health care, transportation, political participation or justice.Did you know that it is estimated that 650 million people in this world live with a disability? And with 359,203 people affected by a type of disability in Malaysia in 2011, intervention and rehabilitation measures are crucial.
Spread the love and awareness from now. Let's ensure that on 3rd December 2013, more Malaysians (and people all over the world) are more aware, receptive and supportive to people with disabilities in our community.
